Deck Update

Here’s some more recent pictures of the deck. It’s finally finished except for the stairs! I got it all done in time for one big party before summer was over. Now it will sit dormant until party season returns again.

The two boys in the pictures are my nephews Joe and RJ. It was a real treat to have them stay with us for a couple days and I was glad to have a little help carrying the decking from the driveway to the back yard. I couldn’t ask for better nephews, I sure love them both!

Down Came the Rain …

img_4641.JPGI thought I would post a few pictures of how the deck is coming along. With the help of several friends I have gotten almost to the end. But now the rain has started and I’ve got to put it on hold again. Someday soon we’ll actually be able to use the back yard again!

Just click on any of the pictures to see them full size (including the one above).

Come See My Big Deck

Not my deckI promised I would tell you what I did instead of going to Florida. Since I had the week off with nothing to do, Mel and I decided to go ahead with a project that I have been really wanting to start for a long time. I ordered a driveway full of lumber and cement mix and got to work building a deck.

If you’ve ever built a deck before, you know how much work it can be. And if you’ve ever built a deck before why didn’t you tell me how much work it can be?! We had an existing covered concrete patio that had to be taken apart first. Knocking down the covered part was fun, but that’s where the fun stopped. The concrete patio was about 10′ x 10′ and about 4″ thick. I used an 8lb sledge hammer and broke it up by hand. I had to move all the pieces out of the work area by hand also.

After that my wife and friend Bryan helped me do some excavation with shovels and rakes to get the work area down to a level that would allow for then new deck frame. A friend from work helped us haul away the pieces of the old wooden and plastic covered porch since I don’t have a truck. A couple other friends came over to help with digging of post holes and that is where we ran into our first hitch.

I had rented an auger to make the digging easier, but when we started digging the first hole it just jammed up in the clay. They rent two types of augers at The Home Depot near our house. I thought the one-man auger would be enough, but it just didn’t cut it. I loaded the thing back in the trunk and headed back to get the two-man version. When I got there I noticed for the first time the big sign above the rental desk that suggested “Call before you dig: It’s the law!”. I looked at the man behind the counter and said, “Is that really necessary?” He told me that once a month someone comes in with a story about cutting through a power line or gas line. That didn’t seem like good odds to me so I elected to wait.

Two days later, to my surprise, we had the back yard checked out by the local utility companies and there was nothing in the way. My brother Chris with just a few hours notice was able to come out and help me dig 15 post holes with the two-man auger. It made all the difference and took only about 45 minutes or so to dig all the holes. He’s my hero.

At this point I finally have all the posts set in concrete and have started to bolt the support beams to the posts. It’s all downhill from here and I should have the deck completed in a week or so. I’m very excited and you’re all invited to the party. I’ll post some pictures when the project is done.

A Few Updates

Mel heard back about the job that she had interviewed for. “Another applicant was chosen” which was disappointing to her, but she still seems hopeful. We will still be moving to the Seattle area, we just won’t be in such a rush. Many of the things that were motivating us to relocate still are factors in spite of this setback. It might actually be a blessing of sorts because it will allow us to be a little more thoughtful and purposeful about the move. I was getting a little worried about having to sell the house in a hurry and possible taking much less than it was worth. Now we can breathe a bit and do this right.

Speaking of the house, my brother Chris who is not only a famous bus model but is also a real estate agent/broker did a “price check” on our home for us recently. It seems the value of our house has increased over $100,000 in the 2 years we have owned it. That is incredible to me and very exciting. It means that if we sell it for near its value we will be able to be completely debt free (I don’t count school loans and car loans since they go on forever) and still have money left for a sizable savings account AND a down payment for our next home!

Finally, I have decide to put school on hold next term while we work all this out. Continuing my education is still a priority for me, but I have learned a few things about myself recently. One is that I don’t manage stress and anxiety all that well, the other is that I function much better in a traditional classroom setting than in a purely online setting. I plan to pursue a more traditional education track when we get to Washington.

BUGS!

Winged TermiteRecently we had our house treated for termites, carpenter ants, and other pests including a swarm of wasps outside the front door. I was very pleased with the results, but unfortunately the ants have returned. This is not extremely unusual. In fact, I was told by the exterminator that it may take up to 6 weeks for the ant colony to die off completely. They guarantee their work, so they’ll come back to spray again.

Carpenter AntIt is also the time of year when the termites from neighboring colonies sprout wings and fly off in pairs looking for a new home. The other night we stepped out of our house to find several of the little buggers wandering aimlessly on the walkway. I don’t believe they came from our house, but i snatched one up in a ziplock bag to show the exterminator anyway when I call them back about the ants. I also got one of the ants in a separate bag.

This morning our housekeeper came up the stairs with a disgusted look on her face holding two ziploc baggies at arms length. I suppose she thought I was starting some sort of collection. I was giggling about the look on her face so much that it took some time to explain what the hell I was doing with two baggies with bugs in them. To be fair, it also took a long time because she is deaf and I have limited fluency in sign language.
