Why Do I Bother?

I posted on this site for the first time on November 17th of last year. Since that time I have written 127 posts and received 279 comments. Now we are approaching the 10,000 visitor mark as you can see on the right in the green counter box. I thought it would be interesting to tell you some of the details about the traffic I get here.

For example, the most searched for page by far is this picture. I have no idea why, but people find this picture in google images from all over the world and come to see it. It was in this article about a new computer I built, but they’re not coming to read the article, they just want to see the picture.

The strangest hit I have ever gotten from a search engine was for “my big dick” which led the searcher to this page. They must have been very dissapointed.

People have also found this blog by searching for “looking for marriage from muslum free email”, “anne hecht gay?”, and “how to work with difficult people”.

I’m curious, blog owners, what are some of the strange hits you have gotten?

Ok … here’s your chance to show your true colors. I’ve been talking about this project in my back yard for a while now, and next month I’m actually going to get it going. This past winter the channel that holds the creek in my back yard finally collapsed. It was a well designed project, but it incorporated inferior materials and the years of moisture and sun have rotted out the timbers. Now I have to remove all the old rotten timbers and replace them with new pressure treated ones. I would love to do the job with concrete, but that is too expensive and too time consuming.

I could really use your help! I am taking some time off from June 19 to June 27 and I expect I will be working on this project everyday during that time. If you are available to help, could you send me an email or give me a call to let me know when? As the time gets closer I will plan some specific activities based on the amount of help I can round up. I also plan to provide anyone who’s willing to help with food and beverages. We’ll probably have a big barbeque at the end of the week. Some of you have already offered to help but didn’t know the exact dates I had available. If you could let me know when works best for you I would appreciate it.

I have been working on a new project lately that has divided my attention even further away from this blog. WhyDoIBother.com is where my heart lies, but I also enjoy spending time tweaking and perfecting my other experimental blogs. The latest of these is YourInfoSpot.com. It’s still in developmental stages, but you can take a look over there if you want. Eventually it will be a massive catalog of articles on many different topics. It is searchable and is thouroughly tagged in Technorati.

I don’t expect those of you who find this blog interesting to read will also find that one interesting to read necessarily, but go take a look and see how I’ve been spending my time anyway. Tell me what you think. It’s the layout that has taken the most work. I had some difficulty getting the text to wrap around the AdSense ads, but I’m quite proud of the way it turned out.

Sadly, I had to remove the shoutbox that used to reside in the right column because of constant spam and abuse. I am able to filter spam comments on my posts pretty successfully, but the shoutbox is less easy to manage. It was a feature I enjoyed and my guests seemed to like it too. I’m sad to see it go. Please continue to leave comments or send emails as much as you like.

The problem with IE scrolling slowly and skipping was definately caused by the transparent image that I was using as a background for the posts and sidebars. Eliminating those images and the fixed background image seemed to have resolved the issue for now. If anyone knows why IE doesn’t know how to handle this properly, feel free to leave a comment here for me. Thanks for being patient, and look for more fine tuning on this layout in the next few weeks.

I have tried to make this theme to work for IE and have had no luck. I think the problem is in the transparent image that is used as the background for the posts and sidebars. I am also trying to implement collapsable/expandable menus. You can see on the left and the right sidebars my attempt at this, but it isn’t very pretty. I have figured out that problem, but fixing it requires some time that I would rather put into a new layout since I have to fix other problems as well. The new theme will likely be much like this one, but more friendly to those of you who insist on using IE as your browser. You really should get Firefox anyway, see the link button at the top of the left column, it is more functional and more compatible with current standards.
