From Dad’s Shop

Here’s dad’s latest contribution to my blog. To visit his site go to www.heirloompens.com.

dadsshop.jpgPot“Today was a productive day for me. I finished another segmented vessel. It turned out to be quite beautiful if I do say so myself. It is made with myrtle wood that my sister brought back from a recent trip to the Oregon coast and with Macassar Ebony and Honduras Mahogany. The top rim and the base are made from one piece of Ebony Gaboon. It is such a satisfying experience to piece it all together and turn it into something like this. I love to hold it in my hands and roll it about. Feeling the texture of the wood and the smoothness of the finish seems to give life to the piece and to the builder.

“It was a day of mixed blessings. I thought all day how good it would be to have one or both of my sons with me in the shop. Over the past few months both of them have built projects while I tried to show them what I know about the craft. It seems important to me these days to leave something with them for their pleasure and joy.

“My father was not a patient teacher. He expected his three sons to somehow pick up the skills of woodworking genetically. He seldom shared a secret of skill or a technique to help in the process. He was quite harsh in his criticism of our efforts. All three of us (my brothers and I) set up woodworking shops after dad’s death. There was never anything spoken about the meaning of this but somehow I know that avoiding criticism was a motivator in this.

“Knowing that my sons want to learn these skills blesses me. Neither of them will make a living at the trade. I don’t make a living at it anymore. In graduate school I used my skills to support my family but other than that it has been a hobby and a passion.

“Sharing that passion with my sons is something I would love to do. They both have such busy lives that it is difficult to fit it in.

“Today I learned that my health is worse than I thought. End stage coronary artery disease sounds so much more final than simply needing a heart transplant to live. The time seems much more precious. I debated today how to divide my tools with my sons. In their hearts they both want the skills and they will undoubtedly pursue them with the same passion of their father and mine.

“Watching them stage by stage in their projects recently assured me that the skill will live on to another generation. As each of them stepped back from their projects and admired the progress I could see their souls smiling. That is where woodworking really resides you know…in the soul of a man or woman. It is too deep to just be hands and fingers and tools and wood.

“I trust my sons will meet me in the shop again soon. I would be happy for it to become a family ritual and a spiritual communion.”

Exercise Is For Fat People

Mel and I made it to the gym this morning, that’s twice this week so far and I promised to go again tomorrow. Exercise is a wonderful thing, at least that’s what I’m told. I don’t know why I hate it so much. Hopefully I will grow to love the gym as much as my computer, but it doesn’t seem likely. If only I could figure out how to blog while I’m using the elliptical machine.

I would love to be in shape again. Well, in a more appealing shape anyway. It’s not that I’m fat at 175, I’m just “loose”. It’s not as bad as it was before we were married, though. I’ve lost about 20 pounds since then. I could stand to lose about 10-15 more.

I took one of those questionaires before we were married that tells you what your biological age is (and then attempts to sell you vitamins or something at the end) and it told me I was about 44. I was 35 at the time. Just out of curiosity I took the same test again this month and I’m 37.7 at age 39. Mel has been good for me. Not to mention that I have quit smoking since that time as well.

I’ll post some photos of me all greased up as soon as I have a six pack to show off. Or as soon as I have a six pack and someone greases me up and takes pictures while I’m passed out.

Immediate Results

After posting my story yesterday about utilizing Technorati tags in an attempt to increase traffic on my site I saw immediate results! According to awstats my average traffic on a friday for the month of January has been about 101 unique visitors. Yesterdays traffic was 186 unique visitors. You do the math.

I knew it would bring in more visitors, but I was surprised at how many and how quickly. The problem is that now I have to write more interesting posts. Hah. It also seems that I am slowly crossing into the “tech blog” arena which is not what I had in mind when I started this, and not what I am really qualified for. The more I work at this, the more qualified I become though.

Thanks for visiting and please keep coming back!

Increased Traffic

traffic.jpgWhile searching for help on increasing my traffic on this site I came across this article at ProBlogger.net. He gave 3 suggestions and I have implimented 2 of them in this very post. Here’s what he says”

1. First, I made the most of Technorati tags. I tagged every key word in each of my posts. Initially I did this manually but them I discovered a WordPress plugin called SimpleTags that made the job a whole lot easier.

I found that by tagging my post effectively they were getting a lot more attention then their untagged counterparts, and as an added advantage I was getting focused, quality traffic to the site!

2. I leveraged my existing website. I’ve been running my business website for a few years and that was getting modest levels of traffic that was relevant to my blog - so why not try to drive some of that to my new blog! I placed a few FeedBurner headline animator blocks on some of my most popular pages and after a day or so I noticed a significant increase in traffic for 5 minutes worth of work on my part.

3. Finally, I made effective use of trackback links to popular sites. If I commented on a post on another site I would make sure that I set up the appropriate trackback for it. The results from this are varied depending on the site and post that you are linking to but since I liked to comment and interact with the wider blogosphere anyway, it was free traffic!

Pro Blogger is a great source of information. I encourage you to read it often and add it to your blogroll. While your at it … add me too!

“Does gramma like to fart?”

Tony Calabrese is "a 48 year old shrinking Italian comedian" and he made me laugh this morning.  I read his site fairly regularly and he makes me laugh every time I do, but this morning’s post was especially entertaining.

Today’s post is all about farting, as you might guess from the title above.  It’s a subject that is becoming more and more important to me with each passing year.

A psychologist who works where I do once told me to always remember the 3 admonitions of old age:

  1. Never pass a restroom
  2. Never waste an erection
  3. Never trust a fart

It’s that last one that gets me … don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about either.  Go check out Tony’s site and tell him I sent you.

Birthday Present

For my birthday, Mel agreed to let me spend $100 on poker online.  My birthday isn’t actually until tomorrow, but I have more time today.  I have been dying to play for real money for a while now and I’m sure I will regret it.  It would probably be best if I lost actually since I am likely to get addicted if I don’t.  I’m not new to the game, I’ve played in some freindly tournaments with the guys from work and have actually won more than I’ve lost.  My biggest win was almost $300, not bad from a $40 buy in.

Wish me luck … or wish me a quick and painless death if you don’t want to see this become another Texas Hold ‘em blog.
