Christmas Cards
Last night as we walked through downtown Portland looking at shop windows in the freezing cold I was thinking about how Mel and I really need to start sending out Christmas cards every year. I mean, we’ve been married almost 3 years now and as a married couple I think there is some sort of law that you have to send out Christmas cards.
Problem is, we both are too lazy. It would require going to the store, picking out some cards, finding everyone’s address, writing a seemingly personal message on each card, stuffing them in envelopes, affixing postage, and taking them to the drop box. Come on … do people really do this?
Of course they do, cause they care. We care too, just … ehhh … less … or something.
As if I didn’t feel bad enough, I was surfing blogs today when I came across this one by Ivory Frog. These handmade cards are amazing. Now I really feel like crap.
Don’t feel bad. Charity and I will have been married for 11 years this Friday, and we’ve never sent out Christmas Cards. Christmas Cards are like Thank You Notes. No one from our generation really expects them, or appreciates them like our parents or grandparents would.
Right! as your mother(You and Chris) I don’t send them out either and I certainly wouldn’t hand make them;what kind of sick obsessed person does this like anyone has the time not to mention the money for this kind of venture. Lets see postage 37 cents per and at least $10-$12 a box for 8-10 cards and you send out 50 cards min basicly because once you start you can’t figure out where to stop. Total cost postage $18.50 cards min $60= close to $80 for something people will just throw away. Why not write a christmas news letter and send it via email, no paper or postage :o)
I guess we know where mom stands on this. lol
Hiya,
Glad you liked them…sorry they made you feel like crap for not sending cards.
This is the first year I am handmaking cards and it is really because…well its something I enjoy doing and we can’t afford to buy people gifts this year so we thought we would put in extra effort with the cards. LOL. Not many of the have to be sent, only maybe 3 or 4, rest will be given by hand to relatives/friends as we see them. No-one that I have given a handmade card to have thrown one out yet (that I know of) including wedding invites that I made 2 years ago.
But really, you shouldn’t feel bad - my boyfriend isn’t really into all the card-giving idea (same reason - they get thrown out) I say give a card if you want, but if you don’t want well thats fine too.
My cards are nowhere near than expensive to make and I wouldn’t say I was a “sick obsessed person” - card-making is my hobby, its fun….and I make them in my spare time (when my kids are in their beds.)
Take Care and thanks for visiting!
Thanks right back to you, Ivory. For the record, I don’t think you’re sick or obsessed either. But you definitely have more drive than I do in the card giving department.
the sick obsessed comment was not intended a personal attack sorry, I think people who can do this are extremely talented i was trying to be funny not insulting please accept my apologies and Merry Christmas
I consider myself sick and obsessed. Just not about Christmas cards . . .
No need to apologise Mom, I didn’t take any offense - you do have a point it can get very expensive buying cards (especially buying handmade cards) but it doesn’t cost a lot to buy sheets of card and paper to make them. I paid £7.99 for a box that must hold at least 500 sheets of card/paper of my choice from my local store - they have a “pick and mix” kind of thing going on. I only have about 20 cards to give out so its not too much work for me either…well once I got past cutting all the shapes out with a craft knife anyway! The actual pattern bit is fun. Not sure I would want to make more than around 20 or so in a short space of time though! Next year I hope to start earlier and maybe get around to selling some - although with 2 kids under 3 not sure how possible that will be. LOL. Oh jeez here I am rambling again - can you see I haven’t had my caffine yet? Its only 5.45am here in Scotland and my eldest has already been up for 2 hours….kettle here I come.

Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too!
dont bother with the christmas cards unless
* You want to help people make an unhealthy profit
* You agree with wasting natural resources
* You have to much time on your hands
And if you answer positively to all three then you dont deserve to have any form of existence
That view may be a little extreme, Robbo. I think each of your points probably has a good argument beind it, but I don’t know about the whole “you don’t deserve to have any form of existence” bit.
I appreciate your comments though. Thanks for visiting.
